Grand Banks 85

During the preliminary test of the Grand Banks 85, hull No. 1 ran flat and pushed very little water, demonstrating the efficiency of its V-shaped warped-hull design.

Grand Banks set out to deliver the most fuel-efficient, high-speed, long-range cruiser of this size in the world. A key component is to incorporate high-tech methods that focus on weight reduction and increased strength.

Each hull employs vacuum-infused E-Glass and then carbon fibre in structural areas, cored with Corecell® and Airex® foam, stitched multi-axial fabric, and 100-percent vinylester resins. The entire deck and superstructure are also fully infused carbon fibre, keeping weight low.

All bulkheads and fixed furniture are structurally bonded to the hull and deck, contributing to what amounts to a singular, robust grid. There is zero creaking or working of joinery and furniture, which will pay dividends in foul conditions.

Hull No. 1 is powered by twin 1,000-hp Volvo IPS 1350s, while twin 1,000-hp, 6-cylinder D13s with straight shafts are available as a no-charge option. Additional engine options are being evaluated.

The end result is an ocean-cruising 85-footer with a half-load displacement of 49,000kg and a 1,000nm range at a fast 21-knot cruising speed.
