Catalina Bay — Auckland’s waterfront secret

Catalina Bay is buzzing for summer as construction continues on luxury waterfront apartment project.

Willis Bond’s Catalina Bay development is looking set for summer with the precinct reopening to a series of events following a busy year of construction.

Most of the public spaces in the waterfront precinct have reopened in time to welcome visitors from near and far to the seaside village they’ve created, with construction continuing nearby on the highly-anticipated Catalina Bay Apartments project.

Located at the northernmost point of Hobsonville Point, the freehold waterfront development offers unparalleled water views overlooking the Waitemata Harbour, providing the perfect backdrop for a long summer of festivities alongside a line-up of award-winning eateries, an artisan farmers’ market and the iconic Little Creatures Brewery.

Formerly the preserve of the Royal New Zealand Airforce, this landmark site has been reimagined as a coastal destination for everyone to enjoy featuring seven completely refurbished heritage buildings and a new pedestrian-friendly precinct area that connects seamlessly to the ferry terminal for a pleasant commute in and out of the bay.

If boating is your preferred travel option, there is an exclusively shared mooring for residents and guests to enjoy metres away from shore.

Renowned architects and master planners for the site – Cheshire Architects – stated:

“It was important to us that we create something that respects and acknowledges both the rich history of the site and the coastal location. It feels as much a part of the water as part of the land.”

The regeneration project – led by property development and investment company Willis Bond – has also seen award-winning architects, Architectus, take on the challenge to deliver a premium residential offering within this urban seaside environment.

Willis Bond Managing Director – Development, David McGuinness, describes the development as being “incredibly unique” in the fact that it is located on freehold waterfront land with protected north-facing water views.

“It’s hard to explain to someone who hasn’t visited Catalina Bay before but it is a very special site with a real seaside village feel to it.

“So many people have bought apartments here off the back of a visit to the farmers’ market, Fabric café or a walk along the waterfront – you’ve really got to see it to believe it,” says McGuinness.

Designed by Architectus, the building takes inspiration from its natural environment, with coastal inspired interiors and architecture that adds to the contemporary village environment.

The team, including Architectus, LT McGuinness and Willis Bond, are no strangers to designing and delivering high quality homes, having together won the 2019 Sir Athfield Award for Housing, for their Wynyard Central development in Wynyard Quarter.

Residents at Catalina Bay Apartments will benefit from an on-site concierge, exclusive shared residents mooring, theatrette and water sports storage, as well as direct access to the ferry terminal, coastal boardwalk and local amenity including The Hangar – shared office, Catalina Bay Farmers’ Market, award-winning eateries and a boutique pilates studio.

There is a selection of two-bedroom wharf terraces, one- and two-bedroom apartments and one final four-bedroom penthouse still available at Catalina Bay Apartments.

Construction of Catalina Bay Apartments is on track for completion mid-2024 with only a handful of north-facing waterfront apartments left.
