Barcelona, 24 August 2024 — In a dramatic early morning showdown, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli took a commanding victory in the latest America’s Cup race, leaving the NYYC American Magic trailing and ending their perfect record in the series.

The race began at 1:22 AM New Zealand time, with Italy seizing an early lead, quickly establishing a 156-metre advantage over the USA, who were left struggling to keep up. As the race progressed, Italy continued to extend their lead, demonstrating superior speed and tactical prowess.

Four minutes in and Italy had approached the first top mark, holding a 17-second lead over the USA. Both teams looked strong as they powered down the second leg, but Italy maintained a significant edge, moving at a pace 6 knots faster than their American rivals.

As the teams neared the end of the second leg, Italy had built a 300-metre lead, further asserting their dominance. At 7 minutes and 30 seconds, the Italian boat rounded the bottom bend and entered the third leg, with the USA not far behind but still struggling to close the gap.

By the 12-minute mark, Italy had entered their fourth length, with the USA close yet still behind, unable to make up the lost ground. Italy continued their relentless pace, entering leg five at 15 minutes and 30 seconds, with the USA trailing 200 metres behind.

As Italy rounded the last gate and entered the final lap at 20 minutes, the USA remained in pursuit, but it was clear that the Italians were firmly in control of the race.

In the end, Italy secured a well-deserved victory, crossing the finish line with a time of 23 minutes and 30 seconds. The USA followed at 24 minutes and 10 seconds, marking their first loss in the series but still holding an impressive record of two wins and one loss.

This victory not only demonstrated Italy’s sailing prowess but also proved that the competition in this year’s America’s Cup is far from over, with any team capable of challenging the favourites on the right day. As the series continues, all eyes will be on their next race to see if Italy can build on this momentum or if the USA will reclaim their dominance.
