The penultimate race of the UniCredit Youth America’s Cup semi-finals delivered exhilarating action, with Italy taking a commanding victory in Race 3, while the UK, USA, and Sweden are left fighting for survival ahead of the crucial fourth race.

In a race marked by penalties, shifting positions, and nail-biting moments, Italy’s precision sailing saw them cruise to victory with a time of 14:30, securing their place in the final. However, for other teams, the journey was far from straightforward, as mistakes and tight competition left the battle for second wide open.

The drama began early, with Australia incurring two penalties right from the start, pushing them to the back of the fleet. Italy, seizing the opportunity, led the charge from the outset, sparking a tense battle with Sweden for the lead-up Leg 1. However, the UK made an impressive move, overtaking Sweden to storm through Gate 1 in first place with a time of 3:58.

Italy, undeterred, reclaimed their lead on Leg 2, extending their advantage to a comfortable 100 metres ahead of the USA in second place. Meanwhile, Sweden, needing a strong performance to stay in contention, found themselves struggling to maintain pace in third.

A critical moment came as the USA fell off their foils just before Gate 2, allowing Italy to slip further ahead. By Leg 3, the Italians were comfortably maintaining their position, with the UK and USA locked in a fierce duel for second. Sweden, still clinging to hopes of making the final, began to close in.

The final stages saw Italy round the last gate with a commanding lead at 11:34, followed by the UK, USA, and Sweden. A costly nosedive from Sweden dashed their hopes of a podium finish, dropping them to fifth, as Australia capitalised on their mistake.

Italy sailed through the final gate with ease, clinching the victory and solidifying their place in the final. The UK secured second place, while the USA settled for third, leaving Sweden in fourth after a disappointing day on the water.

As the teams head into the decisive fourth race, Italy is guaranteed a spot in the final. But for the UK, USA, and Sweden, everything hangs in the balance. With only one spot remaining, the pressure is on for these teams to deliver under intense conditions.
