This year’s event was exceptional, attracting thousands of exhibitors and attendees representing more than 50 countries. The show not only highlighted advancements in technology but also provided a platform for discussions on sustainability, diversity, and the challenges faced by the industry. From networking events and product launches to industry awards and educational sessions, METSTRADE 2024 set new benchmarks for innovation and collaboration.
A strong Kiwi contingent
For New Zealand, a country renowned for its marine expertise, METSTRADE offered an opportunity to showcase Kiwi ingenuity on the world stage. Travelling all the way from New Zealand is no small feat, particularly with the required exhibit materials. With a couple of product launches and presentations of how products, New Zealand companies made the most of the connections and opportunities METSTRADE offer.
Across the board, Kiwi companies sought to showcase how they’re redefining performance, efficiency, and sustainability on the water. In brief:
See-Level presented their groundbreaking VR technology solution for seasickness relief and how it is transforming life at sea.
TecTrax, the amphibious systems innovator presented their purely-electric amphibious system making the on-water experience so much more efficient and safe.
ZeroJet‘s stand showcased their their cutting-edge innovations in electric marine propulsion that are transforming the boating experience.
TruDesign launched its new three quarter inch and half inch compact Ball Valve/Seacock range which are designed to fit in tight spaces where room is at a premium.
Balex Marine launched its automatic one-touch operation yacht tender loading system designed for convenience and safety.
Resene Group brought their Durepox to the show; a product for composite marine vessels and which is used extensively for foiling, sailing and power boats. (Durepox is the product of choice as a primer for all AC40 yachts as well as the Sail GP foiling cats.)
C-Quip unveiled their latest innovation, the ‘Prestige Range’⏤a thoughtfully crafted mid-market line designed to complement their premium ‘Luxe Range’⏤comprising essentials like a swim ladder, boarding stairs, and a tender fender
New Zealand’s ZeroJet, in collaboration with Prestol Composites, earned a finalist spot in the Collaborative Solution between a Builder and its Supply Chain Partner category. Their electric Spark tender, a fully recyclable, high-performance vessel, epitomises the country’s commitment to sustainable marine design.
The Boat Builder Awards: Celebrating excellence
A highlight of METSTRADE 2024 was the Boat Builder Awards for Business Achievement, jointly organised by METSTRADE and International Boat Industry (IBI). This year marked the 10th anniversary of the awards, which celebrate excellence across 11 categories. Held in the historic Maritime Museum in Amsterdam, the gala dinner on 20 November brought together industry leaders and innovators for an evening of celebration.
Among the winners were:
- Lifetime Achievement Award: Mohammed Hussein AlShaali of Gulf Craft, for his contributions to the superyacht industry.
- Rising Star Award: Marieke de Boer, founder of IMPACD Yachts, for her innovative designs.
- Collaborative Solution: Prestige Yachts and Volvo Penta, recognised for their groundbreaking hybrid propulsion system.
While New Zealand companies did not secure any wins, the participation of organisations like ZeroJet and MAST highlights the country’s growing influence in marine innovation. Their recognition as finalists is a testament to the high calibre of work being done in the Kiwi marine sector.
Show highlights: SuperYacht and Foiling Technology
METSTRADE 2024 offered something for every facet of the marine industry, from luxury superyachts to state-of-the-art foiling technologies.
The SuperYacht Pavilion (SYP) was a major attraction, spanning three dedicated halls. It served as the epicentre of luxury marine innovation, showcasing advancements in superyacht design, propulsion systems, and sustainability. For visitors, the SYP provided a unique opportunity to engage with leading manufacturers, designers, and suppliers who are shaping the future of yachting.
Meanwhile, the Foiling Technology Pavilion focused on one of the most exciting trends in modern boating: foiling. As the industry pushes boundaries in speed and efficiency, foiling has emerged as a transformative technology for racing yachts, tenders, and leisure craft. Exhibitors demonstrated cutting-edge designs that promise to redefine performance on the water.
Sustainability takes the spotlight
Sustainability was a recurring theme throughout METSTRADE 2024, reflecting the industry’s increasing commitment to environmental stewardship. The event highlighted a range of eco-friendly innovations, from hybrid propulsion systems to sustainable materials for boat construction.
The Water Revolution Foundation introduced its Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI), a tool designed to help yacht builders and owners measure and reduce their environmental impact. The index is expected to become a cornerstone of sustainable development within the industry.
The Sustainability Project of the Year Award, sponsored by ePropulsion Technology, was awarded to Williams Jet Tenders for their comprehensive sustainability programme. The winning project included initiatives to reduce waste, improve energy efficiency, and promote the use of recyclable materials.
New Zealand’s ZeroJet was among the exhibitors championing sustainability. Their electric propulsion systems offer a glimpse into the future of emission-free boating, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.Women in Yachting
The marine industry has traditionally been male-dominated, but initiatives like the Women’s Yachting Awards are helping to change that narrative. Presented by Yacht Femme, the awards celebrated female leaders who are driving innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity in the sector.
This year’s winners included:
- Rising Women in Yachting Star of the Year: Kaela Bermeister, a trailblazing superyacht captain.
- Entrepreneur of the Year: Camille Lopez, founder of HY-Plug, for her contributions to eco-friendly docking solutions.
- Trailblazer of the Year: Vienna Eleuteri, Vice-President of the Water Revolution Foundation, for her work in sustainability.
The recognition of these individuals underscores the growing influence of women in shaping the industry’s future.
Innovation at every turn
Innovation was the lifeblood of METSTRADE 2024, with exhibitors unveiling technologies that promise to transform the marine experience. From immersive 3D virtual tours of engine rooms to AI-powered navigation systems, the show offered a glimpse into the future of boating.
The InnovationLAB, a cornerstone of METSTRADE, provided a platform for startups and established companies to present their latest breakthroughs. Visitors were particularly drawn to demonstrations of hydrogen-powered engines, lightweight composite materials, and advanced connectivity solutions for smart yachts.
The educational aspect
METSTRADE is not just about products and networking; it is also a platform for knowledge-sharing and professional development. The METSTRADE Theatre hosted a series of thought-provoking sessions led by industry experts.
Dutch Olympic sailor and 2024 World Sailor of the Year, Marit Bouwmeester, delivered a keynote address that resonated deeply with attendees. She emphasised the importance of innovation and adaptability in maintaining a competitive edge.
Another standout session was the Founders Fundraise for Startups, which offered invaluable insights into securing investment in a competitive market. Panellists shared their experiences and encouraged entrepreneurs to pursue bold ideas.
