Too-Close-A-Call on the Water: Why Coastguard Membership is a Must-Have

The other week, we found ourselves in a situation every boatie dreads—our 50-foot yacht's motor failed just 20 metres from the marina entrance. What should have been a laughable mishap quickly turned serious as the strong current began pulling us away from land and into danger.

Fortunately, we managed to secure the yacht to two poles (like mooring poles) marking the narrow causeway. Without them, the current could have dragged us off course and onto the shore. With no other option, we called the local Coastguard. Within minutes, they responded, expertly navigating their rescue vessel to reach us—just 15 metres from the jetty! They swiftly hooked our yacht to their rescue boat and towed us back to safety in under a minute.

Coastguard Whangamata in action

This wasn’t the first time we’ve seen the Coastguard in action. From our berth just out of the marina, we often witness their tireless efforts, heading out at all hours to assist other boaties in distress. Whether it’s a stalled motor, a fuel issue, or a more serious emergency, the Coastguard is always there, hooking broken-down boats and bringing them safely back to shore.

Our Coastguard New Zealand page is filled with inspiring stories of how the Coastguard has come to the rescue of both vessels and, most importantly, people across the country.

Our almost laughable experience was a stark reminder of just how essential Coastguard services are. The reality is, you never know when trouble might strike—even a stone’s throw from the marina. A Coastguard Membership isn’t just peace of mind; it’s a lifeline.

For just $150 a year, you can enjoy 24/7 assistance for breakdowns, towing, and more—avoiding hefty fees that can climb to $350 per hour for non-members. With their expertise and quick response, the Coastguard is a safety net every boatie needs.

Don’t wait for a close call to realise the value of this service. Join thousands of Kiwi boaties who have the Coastguard’s support every time they head out on the water.

If not for you, then for your mate who loves boating, there’s nothing quite like enjoying time out on the water with friends and whānau—it’s at the heart of Kiwi boating. But as any seasoned boatie knows, the unexpected can happen. A flat battery, engine trouble, or running out of fuel can quickly turn a great day into a stressful one.
