Auckland’s maritime calendar is set to shine in 2025 with the third edition of the PIC Harbour Classic, a yacht race inspired by Italy’s iconic Barcolana Regatta. This thrilling event will take place during the Moana Auckland Festival, a six-week celebration of the city’s vibrant maritime culture. From its humble beginnings to becoming a key fixture in Auckland’s ocean-themed festivities, the PIC Harbour Classic encapsulates the spirit of the “City of Sails.”

A Barcolana-inspired event
The Barcolana Regatta, held annually in Trieste, Italy, is the largest sailing race in the world, with over 2,000 boats participating and a Guinness World Record to its name. Its inclusivity—welcoming sailors of all skill levels and boats of varying sizes—makes it a unique and inspiring event. The race also transforms Trieste into a hub of celebration, with activities that attract 400,000 attendees annually.

Drawing from this iconic event, the PIC Harbour Classic debuted in 2023. Organised by the New Zealand Multihull Yacht Club, it offers Auckland a chance to experience the same spirit of community and competition. Adrian Percival, Commodore of the club, reflects on the event’s origins: “We wanted to create something special for Auckland’s sailors and the wider community—an event that celebrates our incredible harbour and maritime heritage.”

Growing success
The first PIC Harbour Classic featured 37 registered boats across five divisions, with the well-known Mayhem claiming monohull honours and Attitude taking the multihull title. The second year saw participation nearly double, with 57 entries and 49 boats making it to the start line. FRANK RACING, a multihull, stormed to victory in under an hour, showcasing the excitement this race brings to the Waitematā Harbour.

Now entering its third year, the PIC Harbour Classic is poised to continue its rapid growth. Organisers aim to draw even more entries, targeting 500 boats within the next decade. “Auckland’s harbour is the perfect setting for an event of this scale,” Adrian notes. “We’re starting locally, but our ambition is to attract international participants and make this a must-do on the South Pacific sailing circuit.”

A key event in Moana Auckland Festival
Just before the Moana Auckland Festival begins there is also the Bay of Islands Sailing Week (January 21–24).
The Moana Auckland Festival, running from January 27 to March 9, 2025, highlights Auckland’s deep connection to the ocean. Alongside the PIC Harbour Classic, the festival will host a range of on-water events, including:
Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta (January 27)
NZ Millennium Cup (February 1–4)
Classic Yacht Regatta (February 20–23)
University World’s Waterski Championships (February 26–March 2)
Auckland Boat Show (March 6–9 at Jellicoe Harbour)
“Moana Auckland is about acknowledging our ocean taonga and everything it offers,” says Nick Hill, Chief Executive of Tātaki Auckland Unlimited. “We’re delighted to have the PIC Harbour Classic as part of this festival.”

Inclusive and accessible
With an entry fee of just $50, the PIC Harbour Classic is accessible to all. Additionally, $10 from each entry goes directly to supporting local sailing clubs, reinforcing the event’s commitment to grassroots sailing.
“We’re proud to sponsor this fantastic event,” says Bruce Morrison, interim CEO of PIC Insurance Brokers. “The Classic offers an exciting opportunity for Kiwis to participate in a premier sailing event at an affordable price.”
Auckland’s maritime legacy
Auckland has long been synonymous with sailing, earning its nickname, the “City of Sails.” Events like the PIC Harbour Classic not only highlight this legacy but also strengthen the city’s reputation as a global sailing hub. Adrian Percival sums it up best: “This event isn’t just about racing; it’s about celebrating Auckland’s maritime culture and creating an inclusive, vibrant festival for everyone to enjoy.”
