The first call for help came from a vessel experiencing issues north of Waipatiki. After bringing the boat back to safety, the team received a second distress call from another vessel near Pan Pac. In a swift response, the second boat was also safely returned to Napier.

A festive safety reminder

As boating activity picks up over the holidays, Hawke’s Bay Coastguard is reminding everyone to prioritise safety on the water. They extended warm Christmas wishes, urging boaters to enjoy the excellent fishing conditions while staying mindful of recent unpredictable weather.

“We want everyone to have a fantastic time on the water, but safety must always come first,” said a Coastguard spokesperson.

Six essential safety tips for boaters

To help ensure a safe and enjoyable time on the water, Coastguard Hawke’s Bay has shared six crucial safety tips:

  1. Wear life jackets: These significantly increase survival chances if you end up in the water.
  2. Carry two waterproof communication devices: Always have reliable means to call for help.
  3. Check the marine forecast: If in doubt, don’t go out.
  4. Avoid alcohol: Save the celebrations for after you return safely.
  5. Skipper responsibility: The skipper is responsible for the safety of everyone on board.
  6. Lodge a trip report: Use the Coastguard app or VHF Channel 01 to provide an extra layer of safety.

Always ready to assist

The Coastguard team is available 24/7, ready to assist anyone in need. “By following these simple rules, you can greatly reduce the risks and enjoy a fantastic day on the water,” the spokesperson added.

Whether you’re fishing, cruising, or just soaking up the sunshine, the message is clear: stay prepared, stay safe, and enjoy the Hawke’s Bay waters responsibly.
