Conrad Colman rounds Cape Leeuwin: eyes set on the Pacific

Conrad Colman, the Kiwi skipper tackling the Vendée Globe, is steadily progressing through one of the most challenging legs of the race. Currently locked in a tight contest with Éric Bellion and just a few miles behind Arnaud Boissières, has I type this update Conrad looks to have rounded Cape Leeuwin: he is officially under Australia now! This is a key milestone as he edges closer to the Pacific Ocean.

Reflecting on the journey, Conrad shared his eagerness to leave the relentless Indian Ocean behind. “I’ve made no secret of my desire to leave the Indian Ocean and find myself back home, off New Zealand, and then in the Pacific: that’s where I get the most pleasure out of sailing!”

However, the passage ahead is far from smooth. A powerful front looms on the horizon, bringing sustained winds of 30 knots and gusts of up to 50 knots. This latest weather system promises yet another tough battle for the seasoned sailor.

Despite the challenges, Conrad’s optimism shines through. With fingers crossed, he looks forward to the Pacific offering calmer conditions and a moment of respite. As he nears his homeland of New Zealand, this leg of the race is shaping up to be both physically demanding and emotionally rewarding.
