Heavy Rain Warning for Wairoa District: Prepare for Wet and Challenging Conditions

Rainfall forecast

Following earlier rainfall, an additional 70 to 90 mm is predicted, particularly in the eastern ranges of the district. Other areas will see lesser amounts, with peak rainfall rates reaching 10 mm per hour. While there is a minimal chance of the warning being upgraded to Red, the expected rainfall could still lead to serious impacts across the region.

Potential impacts

The heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly, increasing the risk of surface flooding and slips. Driving conditions are also expected to be hazardous, with reduced visibility and water pooling on roads making travel more difficult.

How to prepare

MetService advises residents to take proactive steps to minimise risks:

  • Clear drains and gutters to prevent blockages that can lead to flooding.
  • Avoid low-lying areas, which are more prone to inundation.
  • Drive cautiously, keeping an eye out for slips and surface water.

As the heavy rain approaches, the MetService urges everyone in the Wairoa District to remain vigilant and prepared. Keep up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings at metservice.com or through their app.

Stay safe and take precautions to weather the storm.
