In a shift from the recent trend of contraction within New Zealand’s marine industry, a new name has emerged, bringing a wave of optimism. Short Marine, a joint venture between Sam and Ryan Short, and Sean Condon and Lauren Thomas, marks an expansion that bucks the industry-wide shrinkage we’ve seen in recent months. With receiverships, liquidations, and downsizing affecting some of the country’s largest marine businesses, the launch of Short Marine is a welcome sign of renewal and investment in the sector.

A strategic move for growth

Short Marine enters the market with an impressive portfolio of premium brands, which include Grady-White Boats, Viking Yachts, Valhalla Boatworks, and Capelli Ribs. These brands are renowned for their craftsmanship, performance, and appeal to both serious offshore anglers and luxury boating enthusiasts.

The partnership brings together both Sam and Ryan Short, who have established themselves in the Australian marine industry, with Condon and Thomas, the owners of Condon Marine Services in Tamaki Marine Park. Together, they aim to provide a strong sales and service network, ensuring New Zealand boaters have access to high-quality vessels and expert support.

Making waves at the Auckland Boat Show

Short Marine is set to make its public debut at the Auckland Boat Show in early March, where they will showcase two Grady-White models designed to impress Kiwi boaters.

The Fisherman 236 – A 23-foot centre console boat, perfect for family fishing adventures. Built for versatility, it offers ample deck space, a smooth ride, and premium Grady-White quality.

The Express 330 – A 33-foot luxury express cabin boat designed for extended fishing trips and family getaways. With comfortable seating, a well-appointed cabin, and powerful performance, it’s ideal for those seeking both adventure and relaxation on the water.

Sam and Ryan Short will travel from Australia for the show, alongside their New Zealand partners Sean Condon and Lauren Thomas. Visitors to the event will have the chance to meet the team, explore the boats, and learn more about Short Marine’s vision for the local market.

A strong foundation for the future

For many in the industry, Condon and Thomas will be familiar names. As the owners of Condon Marine Services, they have been a trusted name in marine maintenance and support, and their involvement in Short Marine adds a layer of expertise and service that will be invaluable to customers.

Condon Marine Services (CMS) has a team of boat builders providing top-level service to many existing customers in New Zealand. Sean notes that the two businesses, although symbiotic will trade separately, the overlap being where CMS will provide all aftersales and warranty work for all the  Short Marine brands.

This joint venture signals not only the growth of Short Marine but also a potential turning point for the broader New Zealand marine sector. With a focus on premium brands, customer service, and industry knowledge, the company is well-positioned to contribute to the revitalisation of the market.

As the Auckland Boat Show approaches, the arrival of Short Marine is set to make a strong statement—New Zealand’s marine industry still has plenty of room to grow.
