Heavy Rain Set to Lash Northern New Zealand

A subtropical low brings a wet start to the week for parts of both islands.

A humid subtropical flow is set to bring heavy rain to northern parts of the country, with severe weather warnings in place for some regions. A low-pressure system to the north of New Zealand is driving the wet conditions over the North Island today, while a separate front is expected to sweep across the South Island from the Tasman Sea on Tuesday.

North Island braces for downpours

A Heavy Rain Warning (Orange) has been issued for Gisborne/Tairāwhiti north of Tolaga Bay, where 100 to 120mm of rain is expected to fall between 9pm Sunday and 9pm Monday. Peak rainfall rates of 10 to 15mm per hour are forecast for Monday morning and afternoon, which could lead to surface flooding and rising river levels. However, forecasters say the likelihood of an escalation to a Red Warning remains low.

Residents in the area are urged to prepare for potential slips and difficult driving conditions. Authorities recommend checking drains and gutters to minimise blockages and avoiding unnecessary travel in flood-prone areas.

Meanwhile, a Heavy Rain Watch is in effect for the Coromandel Peninsula and the Kaimai Range from 10pm Sunday to 4pm Monday. While rain totals may approach warning levels, there is a moderate chance of an upgrade to a full warning if conditions worsen.

South Island not spared

While the North Island bears the brunt of today’s subtropical rain, the South Island is also in line for heavy downpours as the weather system shifts. The ranges of the Tasman District northwest of Motueka are under a Heavy Rain Watch from 10pm Monday to 8am Tuesday, with a high chance of escalation to a full warning.

The forecast rainfall could quickly elevate river levels, causing localised flooding and potential travel disruptions. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously, particularly in areas prone to slips.

Stay prepared

With wet conditions set to impact multiple regions, authorities are urging residents to take precautionary measures. Clearing drains and gutters, securing outdoor furniture, and staying up to date with MetService warnings will help mitigate potential damage.
