Today’s pre-event press conference, ahead of SailGP’s fourth meet of the season in Los Angeles, provided more details on the reason behind the U.S. team capsizing in Sydney and more information on the new French ownership evolutions. The Los Angeles event will be a world first, with all 12 teams simultaneously taking to the tight course, promising unprecedented racing action and high drama.

Star power and hometown pride for US SailGP

Leading the press conference for the home team was U.S. driver Taylor Canfield, who was hugely enthusiastic about the league’s new Chief Hype Officer—international music star D.J. Khaled.

“We’re excited to have D.J. Khaled onboard,” said Canfield. “He brings incredible entertainment value and will undoubtedly attract new fans, helping grow sailing’s popularity here in the US.”

Canfield was proud to compete on home waters, which was especially significant after a challenging capsize during practice at the recent Sydney event. The U.S. team has used the experience constructively, refining strategies and preparing intensively for a strong performance in Los Angeles.

“Racing at home is special,” Canfield remarked. “We’re eager to harness this home-field advantage and deliver a strong showing for our fans.”

Mbappé boosts France’s momentum

While the U.S. team enjoys home support, France SailGP entered the spotlight after announcing French football star Kylian Mbappé as a new investor and partner. Quentin Delapierre, France’s driver, described this as a significant boost, setting the stage for increased performance and global attention.

Emirates GBR leading the charge

Entering Los Angeles at the top of the leaderboard, Emirates Great Britain’s Dylan Fletcher highlighted his team’s impressive form after their victory in Sydney.

“It’s been a fantastic start—three podiums from three events—but we know consistency is key,” Fletcher explained. “We aim to continue our momentum here in LA, despite the tight and technical racecourse.”

Fletcher credited his experienced team for rapidly accelerating his learning curve in SailGP, as Emirates GBR continues to attract notable sponsors such as J.P. Morgan and Emirates Airlines.

Canada’s rising trajectory

Canadian driver Dyle Scott, fresh from securing Canada’s first-ever podium finish in Sydney, reflected positively on the team’s upward trajectory.

“Sydney felt like a turning point,” Scott noted. “We’ve overcome early struggles and injuries, and now our focus is firmly on incremental improvements. Los Angeles presents another great opportunity.”

The intense competition in Sydney, where Canada narrowly missed victory, reinforced Scott’s commitment to precise execution this weekend.

Swiss team seeks breakthrough

Sebastian Schneider, representing the Switzerland SailGP team, expressed satisfaction with his team’s steady progress, noting that they nearly achieved a podium finish last month.

“Switzerland is definitely progressing, but we’re not satisfied yet,” Schneider stated. “We’re focused on consistent improvement, minimizing risks, and maximising performance, especially on this crowded racecourse.”

Brazil eyes homecoming

Martine Grael, Driver of SailGP team Mubadala Brazil at Auckland 15/1/25

Brazil’s Martine Grail acknowledged previous setbacks, including penalties in Sydney, but emphasised the team’s rapid learning curve and increasing competitiveness. The upcoming SailGP event in Rio has heightened Brazil’s motivation.

“We learned crucial lessons in Sydney,” Grail admitted. “We’re improving fast, and with Rio ahead, excitement in Brazil is enormous. We’re determined to deliver here and at home.”

Racing tactics critical with record fleet

The introduction of 12 teams racing simultaneously—an unprecedented SailGP milestone, finally—creates strategic challenges. Athletes emphasised the need for caution, tactical precision, and heightened awareness to prevent costly incidents in the tight Los Angeles course.

Community spirit and local heroes honoured

Beyond the racing, SailGP continues to highlight its commitment to community. In L.A., local first responders have been invited as honoured guests to watch the racing live.

As SailGP launches its American triple-header, Los Angeles sets the scene for what promises to be a memorable weekend of high-speed action, celebrity presence, and community acknowledgement. The stage is set; now it’s up to the weather, and the teams to live up to expectation.
