As the second fleet race of the day unfolded in San Francisco, all eyes were on France following their dominant victory in Race 5. However, it was Spain who ultimately seized control, delivering a crucial win that could shape the final standings. With the championship race intensifying, New Zealand finally found their rhythm, securing a much-needed podium finish.

The start

The race began with Spain and New Zealand launching off the start line in strong positions. Switzerland also made a promising start, while the Emirates GBR had an unfortunate incident. Coming out of the first gate, the British team suffered a dramatic loss of stability, accidentally bringing both front foils out of the water and falling off their foils entirely.

Early race developments

By the first mark, Spain maintained their lead with New Zealand just 0.9 seconds behind, a much-improved showing from the Kiwis after a disappointing Day 1. Australia emerged as a threat, showing increasing speed in lighter wind conditions. Italy and Switzerland remained within striking distance, while Canada and Germany struggled, falling behind early.

As the teams approached Mark 3, Spain continued to lead, with New Zealand holding onto second place. However, Australia opted for a windier path, strategically positioning themselves to overtake the Kiwis. By the fourth gate, Australia successfully moved into second place, leaving New Zealand in third.

Mid-race drama

France, needing a strong finish to keep their finals hopes alive, faced a series of challenges. They lodged multiple protests throughout the race, though none were upheld. Germany received a penalty for sailing outside the race boundary, further complicating their race. Meanwhile, Canada, France’s main rival for the final spot, struggled near the back of the fleet.

By the fourth mark, Spain remained in control, sailing flawlessly toward the fifth gate and the finish line. New Zealand, desperate for a high finish to keep their championship hopes alive, attempted to close the gap on Australia but couldn’t quite reach second place.

The final stretch

Spain rounded the final mark and charged toward the finish line, claiming a decisive victory in Race 6. Their final time was 9 minutes 26 seconds. Australia finished second, 6.6 seconds behind, with New Zealand securing third place, 19.2 seconds off Spain’s pace.

Switzerland and France rounded out the top five, while Italy, the UK, and Canada lagged behind. The result was particularly costly for France, as they failed to gain ground on Canada in the fight for the final championship spot. Heading into the last fleet race, Canada holds a five-point lead over France, making the final showdown crucial.

What’s next?

With only one fleet race left before the final, the battle for the last championship slot is heating up. France must step up in Race 7 if they want to challenge Canada for a place in the final showdown.
