Caro‘s tactician admits to underperforming — so far

Published

With one major race remaining in the Admiral’s Cup, teams spent Friday in final preparation for the 695-mile Rolex Fastnet Race—an offshore test that carries triple points and could reshape the podium.

Karl Kwok’s Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club team leads the series heading into the decider, holding an 8-point buffer over Peter Harrison’s Yacht Club de Monaco, and a 15-point margin on third-placed Djangos, representing Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.

The implications are enormous. If Royal Hong Kong holds on to win the Admiral’s Cup and claims line honours or IRC overall victory in the Fastnet, it could mark an unprecedented offshore double—cementing Hong Kong’s dominance on the international stage.

Speaking at today’s press conference at the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s Cowes clubhouse, Adrian Stead, tactician aboard Caro for the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, acknowledged the high stakes.

“We’ve underperformed so far, and we’re looking to put that right in the Fastnet Race,” Stead said. “It’s absolutely fantastic to see 15 teams all going hard for it.”

With all still to play for—and three times the normal points on offer—the Fastnet is set to be more than a race to the Rock. It’s the finale of a revived Admiral’s Cup that’s living up to its legacy.
