Designed for comfort and control
Mercury Marine has unveiled its new mid-tiller kit for FourStroke 25hp and 30hp EFI outboards, giving serious anglers and small-boat operators a tiller system packed with features more commonly found on larger engines.
At 8.8 inches (223mm) longer than the standard tiller, the mid-tiller positions the hand grip and controls closer to the skipper — a big advantage on larger dinghies, inflatables, or alloy runabouts where the operator’s seat is further forward. The design also suits those who prefer to stand while navigating at slow speeds, such as trolling or manoeuvring in tight spaces.
Big-boat features in a small-boat package
This is no basic handle extension. The new tiller control is based on the system used for Mercury FourStroke outboards from 40–115hp, meaning you get refined ergonomics, integrated electronics, and precise control in a compact, easy-handling form.
Full adjustability means you can set the tilt, height, and yaw to suit your boat layout and driving style. The ratcheted lock offers three mid-range tilt positions (12°, 30°, and 55°) plus full vertical stow. The bottom stop can be set anywhere from 7° above horizontal to 7° below, giving fine control over the grip angle.
For versatility, the shift lever can be mounted on either side of the arm, and the throttle can be configured to twist clockwise or counterclockwise. Seven yaw settings — centre plus 6°, 12°, or 18° to port or starboard — allow for comfortable driving from either side.
Integrated control and feedback
The tiller arm includes an illuminated warning display that alerts the operator to engine oil pressure, temperature, electrical issues, and other faults, as well as if the safety lanyard is disconnected. A sealed trim switch is positioned under the thumb for quick, weatherproof operation, while a sealed keyed ignition switch is mounted on the side of the tiller.
Mercury’s Troll Control feature allows push-button RPM adjustment in 10-RPM increments to fine-tune trolling speed — ideal for targeting specific fish species or keeping lures working naturally.
Cold-weather ready
For early-season or winter fishing trips, the tiller is pre-wired to accept an optional heated hand grip, available as a separate accessory. With three heat levels, it’s a comfort upgrade that hunters and anglers will appreciate when the mercury drops.
Available now
The Mercury mid-tiller kit is available from mid-March 2025 as an accessory through authorised Mercury dealers, compatible with FourStroke, SeaPro, and ProKicker 25hp and 30hp outboards (including jet variants).
For Kiwi boaters running small, versatile craft, this upgrade offers more than just reach — it’s about bringing the control, feedback, and comfort of a bigger engine to a smaller, more agile package.
