A classic return to Tarawera

If you didn’t register in time, you’ll be kicking yourself. All 40 spots for the second Lake Tarawera Retro Boats Gathering have already been snapped up, proving that last year’s inaugural event wasn’t a one-off.

Organiser Brendon Cornes has again pulled together a day that celebrates classic Kiwi boating. Owners will motor across the sparkling waters of Lake Tarawera, framed by Rotorua’s volcanic backdrop, before heading to the remote and much-loved Hot Water Beach. It’s not a race, but rather a relaxed chance for retro boats to shine in company.

“Last year’s atmosphere was something special,” says Cornes. “It’s all about bringing like-minded boaties together to enjoy these craft in the setting they deserve.”

Prizes for polish and practicality

Adding extra sparkle this year, Shaun and the crew at Performance Boatbuilding in Cambridge are offering a professional cut and polish as one of the event prizes. They’re no strangers to the retro scene, having already worked on a number of classic hulls. Their expertise extends beyond heritage craft, with experience on race boats and luxury launches alike. For the lucky winner, their boat could be gleaming by summer.

The prize pool also features a Weber Baby Q1000 barbecue — a practical reward for any boatie who enjoys cooking on shore after a day afloat.

Building momentum

For a young event, the Retro Boats Gathering has already found its stride. Limiting numbers to 40 boats helps keep the day manageable, while ensuring safety and space on the lake. Word of mouth from last year has clearly driven demand, with entries closing swiftly once registration opened.

Retro boat gatherings tap into something deeper than nostalgia. They bring generations together, reminding us why these designs have endured. From clinker launches to fibreglass icons of the 1960s and 70s, every hull tells a story — and on Lake Tarawera, those stories echo across the water.

Looking ahead

With a proven formula, strong support from the community, and a capped fleet that guarantees quality over quantity, the Lake Tarawera Retro Boats Gathering is on its way to becoming a fixture in the classic boating calendar.
