Emirates GBR delivered a composed performance to win the second and final split fleet race for Group A on Super Sunday, strengthening their position heading into the later stages of the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix.
The race began at 12:12pm in shifting Auckland conditions. Italy led the early charge, rounding Mark 1 just 2.6 seconds off the lead, with Germany and Canada close behind. Brazil slipped back early.
Emirates GBR avoided the congestion at the front and instead focused on clean lanes and consistent pressure. By Mark 2, four boats remained within striking distance, but the pattern soon changed.
At Mark 3, Germany rounded 11.6 seconds behind the leader, with Italy and Canada within 15 seconds. However, the following leg proved decisive. By Mark 4, Germany trailed by 22.2 seconds, Canada by 35.3, and Italy by 47.0 seconds. Brazil fell further adrift.
Canada lodged several protests during the race in an effort to gain leverage, but the umpires ruled no penalty on each occasion, allowing the race to unfold uninterrupted.
From there, Emirates GBR managed the closing stages efficiently. Germany rounded the final mark 17.2 seconds behind, with Canada 24.6 seconds back. Italy and Brazil were more than a minute adrift.
Emirates GBR crossed the finish line in 6:41.107 after start. Germany followed 27.5 seconds later, with Canada third. Italy and Brazil completed the order.
