The New Zealand Jet Sprint Championships delivered a sharp reminder of how quickly things can change on a sprint course.
Boat 66, driven by Bryce Barton with Kylie Barton navigating, missed a crucial turn and struck the safety fence during their run in Taranaki. The moment unfolded at pace. From the live broadcast, pooled water on the racing line appeared to draw the crew’s attention as they approached the corner. In managing that wet patch, the turn arrived fast and the boat ran wide.
The impact looked heavy in real time. Safety crews responded immediately and racing was paused while the fence line was reset and officials inspected the course.
Most importantly, both Bryce and Kylie Barton are unhurt. Early indications suggest the boat has also avoided major damage, which will come as a relief to the team and supporters trackside.
Jet sprint racing is unforgiving. Tight courses, split second decisions, and changing surface conditions demand total commitment from both driver and navigator. Even a minor hesitation can shift the line by metres.
Officials expect only a short delay before racing resumes. Commentary will return as soon as the circuit is cleared and competition restarts.
