The 2027 Bay of Islands Sailing Week has been formally announced, with organisers targeting more than 100 entries as the event builds toward its 25th edition.
Bay of Islands Sailing Week has confirmed its 24th edition for 24–28 January 2027. For anyone who’s made the pilgrimage north to Northland’s finest cruising ground, that’s news worth raising a glass to.

The announcement comes on the back of a significant governance overhaul, with BOISW formally adopting a new Constitution under the Incorporated Societies Act 2022. It’s the kind of unsexy but necessary work that signals an organisation serious about its long-term future, and with a 25th anniversary regatta on the horizon in 2028, the timing couldn’t be better.

Last year’s event didn’t have it easy. The weather didn’t play ball. But those who turned up and raced loved it, with some very close margins in every division and race.
Financially, it proved a difficult run, casting a shadow over planning for the 2027 event. Yet personal pride, memories spanning nearly 25 years, and the camaraderie built over that time prompted a small group, who have chosen to remain anonymous, to dig into their own pockets to keep the regatta alive.
“The willingness of individuals to personally step forward and support the event financially was incredibly humbling,” said Andrew Kearney, the BOISW Chair. “That commitment has reinvigorated the team.”
For 2027, organisers are targeting 100-plus entries as they build toward the milestone 25th. The racing format offers something for everyone: Island Racing fleets get six races across the week, while Windward-Leeward fleets pack in up to ten. A new Regatta HQ location is also on the table, with the goal of lifting the overall experience on and off the water.

Boating NZ readers know the Bay of Islands well as one of New Zealand’s most iconic yacht race weeks. The sailing is exceptional, the location is world-class, and a healthy BOISW is good for the whole northern cruising scene.
Mark the dates. Start crewing up. The Bay is calling.
