Century Batteries extends Coastguard partnership as rescue demand rises

Century Batteries continues its support of Coastguard Tautiaki Moana as volunteer crews face growing demand across New Zealand’s waterways.

Century Batteries has confirmed it will continue its partnership with Coastguard Tautiaki Moana, extending support for the volunteer organisation that carries out search and rescue operations across New Zealand waters.

The company has worked alongside Coastguard since 2010 as the organisation’s Official Battery Partner. Over that time, Century batteries have been fitted to a number of Coastguard rescue vessels operating around the country.

The extension of the partnership comes after another busy year for the service. In 2025 Coastguard volunteers attended 2,785 incidents, helping 6,792 people return safely to shore.

For crews heading out to assist vessels in trouble, dependable electrical systems are essential. Navigation equipment, communications gear and engine starting systems all rely on battery power. When a call for help comes in, that equipment needs to work immediately.

Shaun O’Brien, General Manager Automotive at Century Yuasa, said the company is proud to continue supporting Coastguard volunteers.

“Our volunteers rely on equipment that performs every time they leave the dock,” O’Brien said.

“When you are responding to an emergency on the water there is absolutely no room for failure. We are proud to continue supporting Coastguard so crews can head out with confidence, whatever the conditions.”

The partnership has developed steadily over the past decade and a half, with Century providing marine batteries and technical support to help keep vessels operational.

Coastguard Chief Executive Carl McOnie said support from industry partners plays an important role in keeping rescue units prepared.

“Our volunteers need equipment they can depend on in unpredictable conditions, and Century Batteries’ support helps keep our fleet ready to respond,” McOnie said.

“As demand for our services continues to rise, partnerships like this help us keep our crews safe and our communities protected.”

Coastguard Tautiaki Moana operates from 62 locations nationwide and relies on more than 2,000 volunteers. The organisation responds to thousands of incidents each year while also delivering boating education and marine safety programmes.

Century Batteries, established in 1928, is one of Australasia’s longest standing battery suppliers. The company manufactures and distributes batteries designed for marine, automotive and industrial use in demanding environments.
