After seven fleet races in light and unstable breeze, the three boat final at the 2026 SailGP Sydney event was set. Across the fleet stage, Spain led on 48 points, followed by the United States on 40 and Australia on 38. Spain’s Los Gallos, helmed by Diego Botín, advanced on the back of early dominance. The United States secured their place through disciplined risk management, while Great Britain qualified by sailing a steady and measured series.
The final was decided early. In marginal breeze, the start carried proved important. With only three boats on the line, gaining a good breeze was essential. Emirates GBR and USA timed the start well, while Spain tried to build speed from lower on the line.
On the first upwind phase, USA found slightly better pressure and converted it into forward position. They rounded the first mark effectively level, then edged clear. From that moment, either GBR and Spain took risks to increase their chances of winning, or they lost.
Neither found the right move.
There were brief attempts to lift onto the foils, but the breeze never sustained flight. Most of the race was sailed off the foils, and GBR and Spain simply found it difficult to build momentum.
The Americans adjusted quickly. Rather than chase unstable flight, they focused on platform stability, control and boat speed. In this unassuming manner they crossed the finish line first. Behind them GBR came second and Spain, third.
The victory marks the United States’ first event win since Cádiz in Season 4 under Jimmy Spithill. It is also Taylor Canfield’s first event win as skipper of the U.S. SailGP Team.
It was not a classic spectacle. The breeze never cooperated. But in difficult conditions, the United States made fewer mistakes and converted the one opportunity that mattered.
One race decided it. They took it.
