The kayakers, who had set out on a two-nautical-mile paddle from Geordie’s Creek to Twenty Five Mile Creek, were reported overdue by friends after they failed to return as planned. Police quickly launched a search operation, tasking Coastguard Queenstown and rescue helicopters to comb the area.
At around 2 am, one of the helicopters spotted the kayakers onshore but was unable to retrieve them due to the terrain. Coastguard Queenstown was then directed to their location and successfully picked up the cold but relieved kayakers. Though they had spent several hours exposed to the elements, they were otherwise in good condition. Volunteers aboard the Queenstown Rescue vessel provided water and blankets before returning them to safety at Twenty Five Mile Creek, where they were greeted by their friends and Police.
Lake Wakatipu, the third-largest lake in New Zealand, stretches across 80 kilometres and is known for its clear, deep waters surrounded by dramatic alpine scenery. The northern arm of the lake, where the incident occurred, can be particularly challenging for those unfamiliar with the conditions, with rocky shorelines and limited cellphone coverage making it difficult to seek help if things go wrong. The kayakers had encountered issues with their equipment, forcing them to land, and they were left with no means to call for help due to the area’s lack of coverage.
Stephen Jarvis, skipper for Coastguard Queenstown, said, “The kayakers only had one lifejacket between them and, due to the rocky bluff, couldn’t make it back to the road. Thankfully, they had told their friends their planned route and return time, which helped narrow the search and speed up the rescue.”
Jarvis also emphasised the importance of preparation when venturing onto Lake Wakatipu: “The conditions were fine this time, but Lake Wakatipu’s deep, cold waters and alpine environment can change quickly, particularly the wind. It’s always crucial to be well-prepared.”
Reflecting on the rescue, Jarvis added, “Just two days ago, we were practising shoreline and patient pick-up training with our volunteers. The timing was ideal, and this operation was a great example of why we train—to achieve fantastic results like this.”
Twenty Five Mile Creek, a lesser-known destination on Lake Wakatipu’s western shore, is a remote and rugged area often sought out by adventurers and kayakers. However, its isolation and lack of easy access can pose challenges for those unprepared for the terrain and conditions
This incident serves as a reminder of the value of communication and preparation, as well as the dedication of Coastguard volunteers, whose training and quick response ensured a positive outcome in challenging circumstances.
