(American)Thanksgiving at sea: Conrad Colman celebrates with a special meal while on the Vendée Globe

Kiwi sailor Conrad Colman, currently racing in the Vendée Globe, took a moment from the relentless demands of his solo round-the-world adventure to celebrate Thanksgiving—a nod to his American roots. Proudly representing New Zealand, Conrad is also half-American, with his mother hailing from West Auckland and his father from the USA. The dual heritage gives him a unique perspective on this quintessentially American holiday.

Thanksgiving aboard his IMOCA yacht was a humble affair but deeply meaningful. In lieu of a traditional roast turkey and pumpkin pie, Conrad prepared a special meal using supplies carefully packed before departure. “It’s not quite Mum’s cooking or a family gathering,” Conrad quipped in a video update, “but it’s a chance to pause, reflect, and feel grateful—even when life’s as intense as it is out here.”

Despite the isolation and gruelling conditions, Conrad’s gratitude shone through. He expressed thanks for the unwavering support from his family, friends, and sponsors, as well as the opportunity to live his dream of racing the Vendée Globe.

From the high seas, Conrad Colman’s Thanksgiving serves as a reminder that even in the most extreme environments, there’s room for connection, gratitude, and celebration. Happy Thanksgiving!
