SailGP Auckland countdown: world-class racing set to thrill City of Sails

Published

With just 4 weeks to go, excitement is building for SailGP's much-anticipated Auckland debut, promising an exhilarating spectacle for fans both on and off the water. The grandstand taking shape

Progress on the event site is moving at full throttle, with around a quarter of the grandstand already erected. Once complete, the impressive structure will hold 8,000 spectators, offering fans an unbeatable view of the fast and furious action. Positioned in front of the grandstand will be the exclusive Adrenaline Lounge, providing a lower vantage point for those after a premium experience, while corporate chalets will line the sides.

Around 1/4 of the stand has been built for the SailGP at Auckland in January

On-water viewing options and premium packages have already proven to be hot tickets, with all spots sold out well in advance. In total, the event is expected to host 12,000 ticketed fans per day, showcasing just how high demand is for this elite sailing event.

Hopes are pinned on a fresh west or south-west wind, with the racecourse set up to deliver maximum impact. The first leg will aim straight at the grandstand, ensuring fans will feel every ounce of the adrenaline as the fleet of high-speed F50s blasts past.

The fleet descends on Auckland

This marks SailGP’s first-ever event in Auckland and the league’s third consecutive visit to New Zealand. While Lyttelton Harbour near Christchurch hosted the previous two editions, Auckland—with some widely regarded as the sailing capital of the country—will now have its turn to host the world’s fastest fleet.

The two-day event will see 12 international teams battle it out, with France making its return after sitting out the season opener in Dubai. Quentin Delapierre and his crew will be looking to get up to speed quickly with their new F50, ready to take on the highly competitive field.

For Peter Burling’s New Zealand team, this event is more than just another stop on the calendar. The Black Foils are out to defend their home title after a dominant performance at last season’s Christchurch event, where they edged out France and Canada in a thrilling three-boat final.

New foils, new challenges

Adding an extra layer of intrigue to the Auckland event will be the introduction of the T-Foils. Rolled out across the fleet for the first time, these high-speed boards are set to push the F50s to even greater performance levels. While the foils are expected to make the boats slightly easier to handle, they’re also likely to increase on-water speeds, promising faster, more intense racing. For the sailors, it will be a race against time to master the new equipment ahead of the opening start line.

SailGP tells us that tickets selling fast

With the event starting in a month, Aucklanders and visiting fans are snapping up their chance to be part of this global spectacle. While some of the most sought-after packages—including Waterfront Premium, Bring Your Own Boat, and Shoreline Villas—are already sold out, there are still limited options available.

The Waterfront Grandstand offers a prime shoreside viewing experience, delivering clear sightlines to all the on-water action. Fans keen on an elevated experience can look to the Adrenaline Lounge or other exclusive options for a day packed with entertainment, hospitality, and unrivalled views.

A world-class showcase for the city of sails

The ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix | Auckland is set to be a landmark event for the city. SailGP’s debut here underscores Auckland’s global reputation as a sailing hub and builds on New Zealand’s rich history in high-performance sailing.

For two action-packed days, the world’s best sailors will battle it out in identical foiling catamarans, delivering high-stakes, high-speed racing against the stunning backdrop of the Waitematā Harbour. Fans can expect nothing less than a thrilling showcase of skill, precision, and sheer speed.

Whether you’re watching from the grandstand, soaking up the atmosphere in a corporate chalet, or enjoying the spectacle from the water, SailGP’s Auckland debut is shaping up to be an unmissable event.
