The main action on the Waitematā have already kicked off, with tugboats roaring through the harbour in their annual race. Known for their impressive power and playful manoeuvres, these workhorses never fail to delight the crowds. The tugboats will later showcase their strength in a good-natured but fierce tug-of-war—an absolute must-see.
Classic Yacht Race
At Westhaven, the Classic Yacht Race sets sail in a little over half-an-hour, with the largest fleet of restored A-Class yachts in the world taking to the water. Their polished timber hulls will undoubtedly gleam in the sunlight as they engage in close tactical battles, offering a visual feast of traditional yachting elegance.
Keelboats
For those drawn to cutting-edge performance, modern keelboats will also be racing from noon onwards. These high-tech vessels, manned by some of the best sailors in the region, add a contemporary dynamic to the regatta.

At Narrow Neck Beach, the Sea Scout Cutters, Navy Crown, and Sunbursts took to the water at 9:30 AM. The Scouts’ precision and teamwork are full display as they navigate the waters in these classic vessels, continuing a tradition that inspires the next generation of sailors. Across the harbour, the Murrays Bay Sailing Club hosts the Optimist, Optimist Green, and Starling Auckland Championships. Already underway from 9:00 AM, these youth classes have some of the region’s most promising sailors competing in tightly contested races. It’s a brilliant opportunity to witness the rising stars of New Zealand sailing.
Meanwhile, the Manly Sailing Club took the spotlight at 9:30 AM with its showcase of O’pen Skiffs, RS Feva, Zephyrs, Cherubs, and Wingfoils. These sleek, high-performance craft always promise fast-paced action, with a mix of traditional sailing and cutting-edge technology. Back in the heart of the action, the Northcote Birkenhead Yacht Club are hosting a range of races for RS Quest, RS Aero, Hansa Liberty, and Hansa 303 classes and are already underway, having started at 9:00 AM. These races bring together sailors of all abilities, highlighting inclusivity in the sport.
Tamaki Yacht Club will see Laser, Laser Radial, and Laser 4.7 classes take to the water in a little over an hours time, at 11:30 AM. The Laser class, known for its competitive one-design format, ensures close and thrilling contests. For those drawn to speed and innovation, the Takapuna Boating Club’s events are unmissable. Starting at noon, foiling classes like Windfoil, Kitefoil, Nacra 15/17, Waszp, and Moths will carve through the waves with exhilarating speed, while dinghy classes like Farr 3.7 showcase the technical mastery of sailors.
Family-friendly fun and festival atmosphere
The regatta is also the official opening event of the Moana Auckland Festival, which runs through March. From dragon boat racing in the Viaduct Harbour to interactive waka experiences near Okahu Bay, there’s plenty for families to enjoy. Kids can explore docked boats at the Viaduct, and food trucks will line the waterfront offering local favourites to keep energy levels high.
