Winter cruising in style – RNZYS Motor Yacht Rally Series underway

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron's 2025 Motor Yacht Winter Rally Series is well underway, blending relaxed winter cruising with social, onshore hospitality. Designed to keep members active through the cooler months, the four-part rally series features log racing, destination cruising, and convivial gatherings at some of Waiheke Island’s most scenic and spirited venues.

Held on Saturday 31 May, Rally #1 kicked off the series with a strong turnout and an easy-going start. Six launches departed from the Resolution Buoy, taking part in a log rally — a format that prizes accuracy over speed. Skippers are challenged to predict their journey time, and the closest match wins.

This time, the honours went to Isolate, skippered by Shannon Martin, who clinched the win by staying closest to his estimated time. The destination was the acclaimed Stonyridge Vineyard, tucked into the hills of Onetangi. The vineyard welcomed the fleet with a wine tasting experience that was equal parts elegant and relaxed — a perfect pairing for the day’s cruising.

Rally #2 follows closely on its heels, scheduled for Saturday 14 June. The rally once again starts at 11 AM from the Resolution Buoy, with the onshore component commencing at 2 PM at The Heke, Waiheke Island. Known for its small-batch spirits and relaxed island-style atmosphere, The Heke promises a lively afternoon of tastings and socialising.

Likewise, Rally #4 — scheduled for Saturday 9 August — will round out the winter series with details still under wraps, adding an element of anticipation to the final leg.
