Taupō event saved by community effort

The New Zealand Offshore Powerboat Association (NZOPA) has confirmed that Round 2 of its 2025–26 Championship, scheduled for Taupō on 15 November, is officially back on the calendar.

The association faced a surprise hurdle after the successful season opener at Hobbs Bay, Gulf Harbour, when unplanned venue costs and safety logistics put the central-North Island round at risk.

In a message shared with supporters including Boating New Zealand, organisers expressed their relief and gratitude:

“Awesome news — Taupō is back on! Thanks to the amazing support from our community, we’ve been able to cover the unexpected costs and keep this round alive. We really appreciate everyone who stepped up to help make it happen. Can’t wait to see everyone in Taupō!”

The announcement has been met with enthusiasm across the offshore racing community, which has been steadily rebuilding since NZOPA’s relaunch.

High-speed start to the 2025–26 season

The opening round at Hobbs Bay marked the association’s first Auckland-area event in more than a decade, drawing strong entries and big-water racing conditions off Gulf Harbour.

Round 1 set the tone for what promises to be one of the most competitive NZOPA seasons in years. Early rivalries are already forming:

Next stop: Taupō

With the event now confirmed, attention shifts to Lake Taupō — a venue known for its challenging conditions and spectacular backdrop. Teams are already tuning engines and tightening crews ahead of Round 2.

The NZOPA’s leadership says the renewed community backing is proof that the sport’s grassroots support remains strong. The Taupō event is expected to attract both seasoned campaigners and newcomers eager to join the growing offshore racing revival.
