The MAST Academy Young Leadership Award at the 2025 Barfoot and Thompson Yachting Excellence Awards was presented to emerging sailing leader Lucas Hebberd of the Murrays Bay Sailing Club. The award, supported by MAST Academy, New Zealand’s leading training provider for the marine, composites and specialised technology industries, recognises young people who show exceptional initiative, leadership and commitment to developing the sport at grassroots level.
MAST Academy’s role as sponsor reflects its broader mission of building capability across the marine sector through apprenticeships, school-to-work pathways, pre-trade courses and industry-led training. The Young Leadership Award aligns with their focus on supporting the next generation of skilled and motivated contributors to New Zealand’s marine community.
Hebberd stood out for his substantial impact within youth and club sailing. He played a key role in strengthening the Murrays Bay Sailing Club’s Learn to Sail programme, helping improve structure, participation and the overall experience for newcomers. His work created more training opportunities for young sailors and supported a smoother pathway for those looking to progress beyond introductory levels.
He was also recognised for organising club and family events that helped build a more connected and inclusive community. His energy and leadership encouraged broader participation, strengthened club culture and ensured activities were welcoming to sailors of all ages and backgrounds.
Beyond his contributions to sailing, Hebberd is active in wider community leadership, including serving as Socials Officer for the Auckland University Tramping Club — experience that further demonstrates his ability to organise, communicate and bring people together.
Lucas Hebberd’s recognition through the MAST Academy Young Leadership Award highlights the important role young volunteers play in sustaining and growing the sport. His work embodies the award’s purpose: celebrating emerging leaders who help shape the future of sailing in Aotearoa.
