Empty kayak sparks search off Raumati Beach

Police and Coastguard are searching the Kāpiti Coast today after an empty kayak was found anchored off Raumati Beach shortly after midday.

Volunteers from Coastguard Kapiti Coast launched Mills Albert Rescue to investigate after the kayak was reported drifting unattended about 500 metres offshore. Fishing gear was still on board, raising concerns that a kayaker may be missing.

Police, Paekākāriki Surf Club and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter are all involved in the search effort.

Police are asking anyone who recognises the kayak, or who may have information that could help identify the owner, to contact the 105 service and quote event number P064619223.
