Ken Lupton sets the tone, with an early challenge for the 2026 EC Griffith Cup

Ken Lupton has publicly set the challenge.

With nearly four months remaining before the start of the 2026 EC Griffith Cup, Australasia’s most prestigious powerboat race, Lupton has confirmed his intention to contest the event. The decision marks a deliberate return to one of the region’s most demanding motorsport prizes.

Across two decades of Grand Prix Hydroplane racing, he has built a record that stands comfortably on either side of the Tasman and well beyond it. Multiple major titles sit on his résumé, including back to back Hydroplane Racing League championships in North America. Yet one trophy remains absent.

The EC Griffith Cup has resisted him, despite close calls and long experience. Lupton’s history with the Cup sharpens the intent behind this return. In 2008, racing Annihilator 3, he finished second behind his father, Warwick Lupton. In 2016, he again crossed the line second, this time after a controversial disqualification that was later overturned. Results aside, the pattern is clear.
