French electric propulsion company Temo has long been a name worth watching, and its latest product makes a compelling case for rethinking how small sailboats are powered.
The Outpod took out the Best Product Innovation Award at the 2025 Paris Nautic Show Boatnews, and it’s easy to see why. It sits in an interesting space between a classic pod drive and an outboard motor, mounted externally on the transom via a rail system with no hull drilling required. That makes it genuinely attractive for retrofits, where owners want the efficiency of a pod without the cost and disruption of major structural work.
The core concept is straightforward. The drive unit mounts on a height-adjustable sliding mast bolted to the transom. A simple halyard raise lifts the motor clear of the water when sailing, eliminating drag, reducing fouling, and cutting the risk of electrolysis. Full 180-degree rotation means maneuvering in tight spaces is handled with the motor itself, and the same rotation allows the unit to function as a hydrogenerator under sail.
The Outpod 1000 pack, aimed at sailboats up to nine metres, runs a 1,100W brushless motor on a 48V system. At 12 kilograms, it’s noticeably lighter than a conventional outboard at the stern, which matters for trim and performance on smaller boats TEMO France. There’s no gearbox, which simplifies maintenance, and the manufacturer rates the motor for up to 1,500 hours before significant service is needed.
Battery options are flexible: TEMO’s own rack-mountable cassette batteries can be stacked to increase range, and the semi-open system also accepts partner batteries for owners wanting to use an existing setup Boatnews. The pack includes the motor, remote throttle, motor control unit, display, and all cables. Batteries and charger are sourced separately.
Designed and built in Brittany, each unit carries a three-year warranty for private use TEMO France, with French-based customer support promising 24-hour response times.
