Get more from your boat by balancing the load

Proper weight distribution is one of the most overlooked factors in powerboat performance, yet it influences everything from acceleration and top speed to fuel efficiency and stability. While many operators focus on engine power, where that weight sits on the boat matters just as much.

The centre of gravity determines how a boat sits in the water. Too much weight forward buries the bow and increases drag; too much aft sinks the stern and reduces control. Getting the balance right, in line with the hull’s designed waterline, allows the boat to plane efficiently and respond predictably. This applies equally to trailer boats with outboard motors as it does to larger inboard-powered vessels.

A well-balanced boat reaches planing speed faster, burns less fuel, and handles more safely at speed. Poor distribution forces the hull into an inefficient attitude, wasting power and increasing fuel consumption. In turns and rough water, correct lateral balance becomes especially important, keeping the hull in even contact with the surface and reducing the risk of instability.

Practical steps include spreading fuel across multiple tanks rather than loading one side, positioning passengers to maintain an even waterline, and stowing heavy gear low and centrally. Regularly assessing how different loads affect handling builds the intuition to adjust on the fly.

Whether you’re running a trailerable 5-metre aluminium boat with a 90hp outboard or a larger centre console, the principles are the same. Understanding and managing weight distribution is one of the simplest ways to improve performance, safety, and range, without touching the engine at all.
