GPS device to keep track of boaties when cell range drops out

For the first time a GPS device that seamlessly switches to satellite once cellular connectivity is out of range, is available for recreational boat users.

And for Sam Allen, one of the founders of NZ Boat Register, it’s a particularly personal achievement.

His parents were rescued only by chance, after they were lost at sea and radio transmission stopped working.

The AquaGPS device has been two years in the making, and provides coverage for up to 85 nautical miles offshore with a position recorded every 2 minutes.
