Paddling Community remembers Simon McLarin

Simon McLarin died doing what he loved. The Waitemata Canoe and Multisport Club legend suffered a medical event while paddling on Saturday morning, leaving the Auckland kayaking community in shock and mourning one of its most beloved figures.

For decades, McLarin competed across every discipline—sprint, marathon, slalom—racking up titles locally, nationally and internationally. But his influence extended far beyond his own results. Clubmates remember him as endlessly generous with his time and knowledge, the first to welcome newcomers and share his hard-won expertise. Off the water he was funny, sharp-tongued, always ready for a laugh. On the water, he was formidable and fearless.

Those closest to him rarely saw him without his trademark plastic bag pogies wrapped around his hands. His family was woven into the fabric of his paddling life, present at events and club activities, supporting his passion for the sport he never stopped pursuing.

Waitemata Canoe Club will host the McLarin Memorial Marathon on Sunday, 19 July to honour his life and accomplishments. The event offers 20km, 10km and 5km courses open to anyone wanting to paddle in his memory. All proceeds go to his family. The club is inviting the community to celebrate as McLarin would have wanted—battling it out on the water.

A Givealittle page has been established to support his family with funeral costs and other expenses during this difficult time. Those in a position to contribute can do so online.

The paddling community acknowledges those who responded quickly to assist on Saturday, including fellow paddlers and wider on-water volunteers. Support has been offered to anyone affected through the club.
