Southern Pacific Boats, a leading builder of high-quality Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs), has launched the Cormorant Electric 490, combining the southern hemisphere’s most popular coach boat platform with ZeroJet’s 30kW electric jet propulsion system.
Built on a proven 16-degree aluminium hull, the Cormorant Electric 490 integrates a 30kW ZeroJet system with 22kWh of battery capacity to deliver outstanding performance, safety, and sustainability. Designed for versatility, it is ideally suited to coaching, tender, and commercial applications.
Electric jet propulsion enables safe shallow-water operation while eliminating petrol use and complex mechanical maintenance. With thermally welded tubes and a rugged aluminium construction, the vessel is engineered for demanding marine environments.
Director Dean Barker said the electric system elevates an already capable platform, noting its excellent handling, manoeuvrability, and suitability as a mark layer, safety, and coaching boat. He highlighted the added safety and control of the jet unit during challenging conditions at the Bays Regatta, describing the boat’s performance as exceeding expectations.
ZeroJet CEO James Morton said the partnership showcases the capability of ZeroJet’s 30kW system to deliver lightweight, commercial-grade performance. During a full day on the water at the regatta, the boat covered more than 20 nautical miles and retained ample battery capacity, demonstrating the practicality of electric propulsion for club and commercial use.
The Cormorant Electric 490 features a digital throttle with instant electric reverse and a 3.5-inch display providing diagnostics, battery data, and intelligent range prediction.
