Flexofold folding propellers now have a distributor in Australia and New Zealand. Scandinavian Marine Supplies announced its appointment from Sydney on 18 September and says the range is available for delivery in both countries now.
Flexofold is a Danish manufacturer of folding and feathering propellers for sailing yachts, and every one is designed and built in Denmark. The company says its props are trusted by offshore racers, bluewater cruisers and performance yacht owners across more than 60 countries. The folding mechanism is patented, and the blades are precision-machined bronze and composite.
Scandinavian Marine, which says it has strong relationships across the marina, boatyard and dealer network in both countries, will handle sales, technical advice and after-sales service for local owners.
Less drag under sail
The case for a folding prop comes down to drag. Under sail the blades fold tight against the shaft, which cuts resistance and lifts boat speed, an edge on the race course and on ocean passages alike. Under power they open out for strong thrust, and Flexofold says vibration and noise stay low.
Props come in two- and three-blade versions across a range of shaft diameters and pitch options. Scandinavian Marine says that covers the vast majority of yachts in the Australian and New Zealand fleets.
What’s on offer
At the racing end sits the two-blade folder, which Scandinavian Marine calls the benchmark for minimum drag. The three-blade version is aimed at cruising yachts that want performance without giving up motoring ability. Saildrive versions are available for leading units including Volvo Penta and Yanmar, and spare parts and service kits are on the list to keep owner maintenance simple.
