A new chapter has begun for the British International Harmsworth Trophy, one of powerboating’s oldest and most prestigious prizes. First contested in 1903, the competition has been reinvented as an electric-only challenge.
The British-built SpiritBARTech F35, developed by BAR Technologies and Spirit Yachts, has become one of the first entrants, completing the Poole–Cowes–Poole course in one hour, 36 minutes and 53 seconds at an average speed of 30.35 knots.
Unlike traditional races, the new Harmsworth Electric Boat Challenge is a year-long time trial, with competitors aiming to set the fastest course time.
Using advanced foiling technology and electric propulsion, the SpiritBARTech F35 demonstrates that high performance and efficiency can go hand in hand. BAR Technologies says the challenge highlights the growing role of sustainable technologies in the marine sector, while proving electric power can still deliver excitement on the water.
The benchmark is now set, and challengers have the rest of the season to beat it.
