When he first arrived in Auckland on August 2, 1933 to join HMS Diomede the Auckland Star called Sub-Lieutenant Home (pronounced Hume by the way) Kidston “tall, good-natured, good-looking”. Its feature writer could have added “fabulously wealthy” to that description. His de Havilland Moth aeroplane and his Riley-engined Vosper Jolly Boat speedboat had arrived on the Rangitane with him.
