The vision of Percy Vos’s boatbuilding shed being repurposed into a working display of traditional wooden boatbuilding took a big step forward with the completion of major restoration.
Built in 1922, the Percy Vos shed and its associated slipway had deteriorated since its closure in 1994. However, Eke Panuku Development Auckland, in partnership with the Percy Vos Charitable Trust, has just completed a two-year restoration of the shed. On August 12 around 100 stakeholders and wooden boat enthusiasts attended the official opening.
It’s planned that the shed and its adjacent slipway will become a working maritime heritage centre with public access, along with training in traditional wooden boatbuilding skills.
These arrangements are still being finalised and Boating New Zealand will do a follow up story once they’ve been completed.
