Race 1: The Dream Continues For Alinghi Red Bull Racing, winning over INEOS Bratannia

Published

In a race that carried significant consequences for both teams, Alinghi Red Bull Racing (Swiss) secured a crucial victory over INEOS Britannia (UK) in a thrilling match that showcased the Swiss team's growing form and the UK's mounting struggles. With the Swiss facing elimination if they lost, the pressure was on from the start, and they rose to the occasion, delivering one of their best performances of the season.

From the moment the race began, it was clear this would be no ordinary contest. The wind was blowing strong, allowing both teams to race at speeds of up to 40 knots. The Swiss initially grabbed an early lead, but INEOS Britannia swiftly overtook them midway through the first leg. As the British team built a 120-metre lead, they looked well-positioned to control the race. However, the turning point came when the Swiss momentarily came off their foils but managed to recover quickly.

By the time both teams approached the first gate at 4 minutes and 31 seconds, INEOS Britannia still held a narrow lead, crossing just six seconds ahead of the Swiss. What followed was a fierce battle as the teams entered the second leg. Alinghi Red Bull Racing, showing incredible speed and determination, surged forward, clocking speeds of 35 knots compared to the UK’s 25 knots. The Swiss quickly gained the upper hand, establishing a 200-metre lead by the midway point of Leg 2.

The Swiss team’s pace continued to increase, fuelled by their advantageous position in stronger winds, while INEOS Britannia struggled to keep up. A boundary penalty against the UK compounded their woes, allowing the Swiss to extend their lead to 700 metres by the time they passed Gate 2 at 8 minutes and 48 seconds. The UK followed a full minute behind, and from that point, it became clear that the British team was facing an uphill battle.

As the race progressed, Alinghi Red Bull Racing only seemed to grow stronger. By Gate 3 at 12 minutes and 47 seconds, they had maintained their 1-minute lead, with INEOS Britannia failing to close the gap. The Swiss team’s boat handling was impeccable, even in the rough conditions, which proved challenging for many of the teams in this competition. Their ability to sail cleanly and consistently allowed them to dominate, and by the time they reached Gate 4 at 15 minutes and 56 seconds, they were a full 1,000 metres ahead of their British rivals.

While INEOS Britannia briefly gained ground due to a wind shift in their favour, reducing the gap to 500 metres, it wasn’t enough to stage a comeback. The Swiss team sailed with precision and composure, ensuring that their lead remained intact. Alinghi Red Bull Racing passed through the final gate at 20 minutes 22 seconds; their victory was all but sealed.

INEOS Britannia, still struggling, suffered a significant blow when they fell off their foils just before crossing the final gate, sealing their fate. They trailed a massive 950 metres behind the Swiss as they passed the final mark, finishing the race 1 minutes and 23 seconds behind their opponents.

For Alinghi Red Bull Racing, this victory was more than just a win—it was a lifeline. The Swiss team has now won two races in a row, a remarkable turnaround after a shaky start to the competition. Their performance in this race was nothing short of outstanding, showing absolute determination, skill, and tactical mastery. They will live to race another day, keeping their hopes of advancing in the America’s Cup alive.

For INEOS Britannia, this defeat marks a setback, though they remain in a strong position with four wins overall. However, the team will need to address the errors and penalties that have plagued their recent performances if they hope to secure a place in the finals.
