Both teams looked strong at the start, but neither crossed the line cleanly, forcing a re-loop. The UK team initially took the lead, but it was a close match with neither team gaining a significant advantage. Italy eventually edged ahead by 50 metres, a lead that kept expanding.

Italy passed the first gate 25 seconds ahead of the UK, and by leg 2, they were 200 metres ahead. They expanded their lead to 350 metres and rounded the second gate at 7:35. Then the UK boat fell off its foils, sealing the team’s fate as it struggled to get back up and fell 1100 metres behind as they entered leg 3.

Italy continued to extend their lead, reaching gate 3 at 11:31 with a 1500-metre advantage. By gate 4 at 14:42, the UK was still lagging far behind. Despite a brief reduction in the gap to 900 metres, the UK fell back to 1000 metres behind.
