Youth America’s Cup : Semi Final Race 1 – Artemis beats Luna Rossa in an exciting first race

The opening race of the UniCredit Youth America’s Cup semi-finals delivered high-octane drama as Sweden pulled off a stunning victory, setting the stage for what promises to be a fiercely contested series. Coming into the race as the invited team who had blazed through the early rounds of the competition, Sweden showed tactical brilliance and calm under pressure to take the first of four critical races.

The race began with Australia (AU) taking the early initiative, only for Italy to seize the lead seconds later. However, the competition remained tight, with the boats bunched within 70 metres of each other as they charged through the first leg. The US team held second place briefly, before Sweden made their first decisive move, catching an opportune wind pocket to glide into second, hot on Italy’s heels.

The first major twist came midway through leg one, when Italy incurred a penalty, dropping them to fourth and allowing Spain to leap into second. Sweden capitalised on Italy’s misfortune, taking a commanding lead through the first gate at 3:37, with Spain a close second. The Americans, despite their initial strong start, found themselves trailing, the last to pass through the gate just 13 seconds after Spain.

As the boats raced into the second leg, Spain briefly took charge, but Sweden refused to be shaken. At the halfway mark, Sweden surged ahead, maintaining pressure on the fleet and retaking the lead. By gate two, the Swedish team’s skill was clear, holding a narrow two-second advantage over Spain, with Italy, AU, the UK, and the US in pursuit.

The third leg saw yet another lead change as Spain briefly regained control, but Sweden was determined. Despite fierce pressure from Spain and a revitalised Italian team, Sweden’s consistent pace and tactical prowess pushed them back into the lead. With only 30 metres separating the top two boats and Italy creeping up in third, it was a nail-biting affair.

In the final stretch, Sweden asserted their dominance. With a 100-metre gap on Spain and their rivals struggling to keep pace, the Swedish crew passed through the final gate at 10:39, securing a comfortable lead. Italy, making a late surge, overtook Spain just before the final gate, positioning themselves for a strong finish.

As Australia fell off their foils, effectively conceding last place, Sweden extended their advantage to a commanding 200 metres. The finish line was crossed at 13:15, with Sweden securing a crucial win. Italy followed 11 seconds later, with the UK snatching third place by mere milliseconds from Spain, who settled for fourth. The US finished in fifth, while Australia, after a promising start, finished a distant sixth.

Sweden’s victory has put them in an excellent position moving forward in the semi-finals, and they may well continue to surprise the competition. With three more races to go, the team has proven they have both the skill and composure to capitalise on opportunities and navigate the pressure of high-stakes sailing.
