Coastal personal safety race clinic

Written by

The PIC Coastal Classic has long been committed to ensuring the safety and preparedness of its participants. Over the past few years, the event has introduced a series of race clinics focused on boat preparation, night sailing, tactics, and weather—each providing vital information to enhance race day performance.

This year, the PIC Coastal Classic announces the introduction of a third clinic, specifically dedicated to Coastal Personal Safety. This new addition underscores the race’s commitment to the welfare of its participants and is tailored to crew, emphasising the importance of teamwork and readiness.

Simon Hull, from the PIC Coastal Classic Safety Committee, explains the rationale behind this new clinic: “We have always emphasised safety in our clinics, but this session is really talking about coming together as a team in advance of the race. It’s an opportunity to discuss drills, review procedures, and ensure everyone is aware of their responsibilities. It’s really a refresher of what we all know we should do. The skipper must ensure that not only is the boat ready, but the crew is also crew-ready.”

This interactive clinic will cover a range of topics, including man-overboard drills, emergency procedures, and communication protocols. By running through these scenarios in advance, crews can ensure they are prepared for any situation that may arise during the race. The aim is to instil confidence in both skippers and crew members, reinforcing the importance of safety as a shared responsibility.
