Coastguard Taranaki’s unwavering dedication to maritime safety has been recognised in a remarkable way, with the unit securing four well-deserved nominations in the 2024 Coastguard New Zealand Volunteer Awards. These nominations not only highlight the skill and commitment of the Taranaki volunteers but also showcase their contributions to the broader community.
Michael Langford Nominated for Unit Support Volunteer of the Year
Michael Langford’s hard work has earned him a nomination for Unit Support Volunteer of the Year, which honours volunteers in non-operational roles such as training officers, safety coordinators, and management committee members. Since joining Coastguard Taranaki in 2020, Michael has been an active rescue vessel crew member on the Todd Energy Rescue, clocking around 600 hours annually. Currently working towards his senior crew qualification, he also manages the unit’s Maritime Operator Safety System (MOSS) documentation and serves as the Unit Safety Coordinator.
In 2024, Michael took on the additional role of Incident Management Team (IMT) coordinator and also serves as a relief Duty Officer. His extensive health and safety background, combined with his hands-on approach, ensures that crew members are kept safe in all their operations. From arranging the annual servicing of life-saving equipment to managing vessel hauls, Michael’s contribution is instrumental in the smooth running of the unit.
Ian Gabites Nominated for Communications/Incident Management Volunteer of the Year
Ian Gabites, another standout volunteer, is nominated for Communications/Incident Management Volunteer of the Year. This award recognises the excellence of volunteers working in communication and incident management roles that are essential to search and rescue operations. Ian, an active radio operator and Duty Officer, has dedicated over 500 hours annually to the unit.
Ian’s qualifications include CIMS4, Marine SAR Technical, and Communications Instructor, all of which enhance his capabilities in managing search and rescue responses. A key trainer for radio operators, he ensures the team is always at its best. One notable example of his expertise came during a complex tow operation involving a 7-metre launch 50 nautical miles off the South Taranaki coast. Ian’s management of the response ensured the safe return of the vessel and crew under challenging conditions.
Geoff Bunn Nominated for Emerging (Young) Volunteer of the Year
Coastguard Taranaki’s bright future is reflected in the nomination of Geoff Bunn for Emerging (Young) Volunteer of the Year. Geoff, who joined in February 2022, has quickly risen through the ranks, completing his Deckhand and Qualified Crew training while balancing an automotive apprenticeship. His 400 hours of volunteering each year are marked by dedication, with Geoff regularly being one of the first to respond to callouts.
Beyond his operational duties, Geoff serves as Health and Safety Representative and tractor driver for vessel launches. He has also earned a spot on the Management Committee, demonstrating leadership qualities and a positive attitude. Geoff is a strong role model for new trainees and is seen as a future skipper.
Coastguard South Taranaki – Rescue of the Year
Coastguard Taranaki’s commitment to saving lives is epitomised by their nomination for Rescue of the Year for their efforts in the search for a missing diver off the South Taranaki coast in March 2024. Over five days, the team dedicated around 900 hours to the search, often facing adverse weather conditions. While the operation ultimately became a body recovery mission, the unit’s professionalism and compassion were a source of strength for the Pātea community, which had personal connections to the victim.
In honour of the rescue, Pātea School held a fundraising event in memory of the victim, and Coastguard Taranaki plans to present the school with a plaque of appreciation, cementing their bond with the community.
Recent Rescues in 2024
The past year has been a busy one for Coastguard Taranaki. Notable incidents include a February callout to assist a vessel that had lost power 14 nautical miles off the coast, followed by another emergency response to a boat taking on water at Onaero. The team also dealt with a late-night rescue in April, towing a fuel-depleted boat through challenging sea conditions, highlighting their persistence and teamwork.
Recognising Dedication
These four nominations reflect the exceptional dedication and tireless efforts of Coastguard Taranaki’s volunteers. Whether managing life-saving equipment, coordinating search operations, or responding to emergencies, the team’s work continues to make a vital difference in ensuring the safety of those at sea.
As the Coastguard National Awards of Excellence approach, the Taranaki community stands proudly behind its local heroes, who exemplify the very best of volunteerism and maritime safety.
