Bay of Islands Sailing Week is New Zealand’s largest multi-day sailing regatta, held annually in January and attracting both local and international sailors. It features racing across various classes, including keelboats, trailer yachts, and multihulls, in the scenic waters of the Bay of Islands. This week-long event typically includes registration on Tuesday, followed by three days of competitive racing, with each division racing in distinct areas across the bay. A popular feature of the regatta is the Thursday-night beach party, usually hosted on Urupukapuka Island, adding a lively social aspect to the intense racing atmosphere.

The Vision Behind Bay of Islands Sailing Week

The concept for the regatta came from Tony and Nina Kiff, a couple originally from England who made the Bay of Islands their home after arriving in 1992 on their yacht with four children. Inspired by the region’s scenic beauty and welcoming community, the Kiffs envisioned a premier sailing event that would showcase the Bay of Islands as an ideal destination for both competitive yachting and holidaying.

With determination and support from the Opua, Kerikeri, Russell, and Bay of Islands yacht clubs, the first Bay of Islands Sailing Week launched with a $500 loan from each club, complemented by a $5,000 grant from the Far North District Council. Tony Kiff led as Chairman, with Nina serving as Treasurer, and a dedicated team of representatives from local yacht clubs contributing to make the event a success.

What to Expect at the 2025 Regatta

Held at the stunning Bay of Islands on New Zealand’s upper North Island, this multi-day regatta offers races for keelboats, trailer yachts, and multihulls. The event begins with registration on Tuesday evening, followed by three days of competitive racing Wednesday to Friday, concluding with a lively prizegiving ceremony on Friday night.

Racing is split into three main areas:

  1. Outer Course: For divisions A, B, M, and Young 88, offering a mix of windward/leeward and bay races.
  2. Middle/Inner Course: For divisions C, E, and Sports Boats, also with windward/leeward and bay races.
  3. Island Racing: Featuring one bay race each day, providing a scenic challenge.

A True Community Effort

The Bay of Islands Sailing Week wouldn’t be possible without the 60+ volunteers who dedicate their time and energy each year. Their passion and commitment help bring top-tier racing to the New Zealand sailing community, keeping the event true to the Kiffs’ original goal. Sponsors and supporters also play a key role in sustaining the regatta, funding everything from event logistics to prize awards.

Highlights Beyond Racing

An event staple, the Thursday-night Beach Party at Urupukapuka Island offers a chance for sailors to unwind. This year’s party, hosted by regatta sponsor Explore, takes place at the scenic Otehei Bay resort, providing a relaxed atmosphere with live music and local fare.

Participants can expect a well-equipped Regatta HQ in Opua, where registration, briefings, and evening entertainment will be held in the main marquee. Food trucks and a licensed bar operating on a ticket system ensure refreshments are readily available. For those looking to explore beyond the regatta, the Bay of Islands offers abundant marine life, coastal trails, and historic sites, making it a perfect summer getaway.
