Boris Herrmann Battles Lightning Strike and Chaos at Sea in Vendée Globe

Sailor Boris Herrmann, aboard Malizia-Seaexplorer, faced one of the most harrowing days of his career during the Vendée Globe, as his yacht was struck by lightning amidst relentless thunderstorms. Herrmann, who was racing in 6th position at the time, described the ordeal as an unforgettable experience of nature’s fury.

A Day of Relentless Chaos

The day began with an intense weather front, bringing torrential rain and thunderous storms that Herrmann said were unlike anything he’d seen in his extensive sailing career. The storm battered Malizia-Seaexplorer with waves so fierce that the boat was repeatedly laid flat on the water, leaving Herrmann struggling to maintain control.

“The sea really showed me its teeth yesterday,” Herrmann shared. “It’s a day I won’t forget.”

The chaos reached its peak when lightning struck near the yacht, instantly disabling key systems, including the autopilot, radar, and main screen. Alarms blared, and the boat drifted uncontrollably.

Battling Through Adversity

With no time to rest, Herrmann climbed the mast to assess the damage and worked tirelessly to restore functionality. His shore team provided critical support, enabling him to recover one autopilot and essential wind instruments, allowing him to continue racing.

“Since climbing the mast, I haven’t had much rest. The boat could easily hit 30 knots if I wasn’t paying attention,” Herrmann noted.

Despite the recovery efforts, many systems remain inoperable, including foil rake readings, load sensors, and radar. The keel system is now partially manual, increasing the physical strain on Herrmann.

Resilience in the Face of Setbacks

This incident marks the second lightning-related challenge for Malizia-Seaexplorer in six months, following a catastrophic strike in New York that destroyed all onboard systems. Herrmann remains optimistic, expressing hope that this storm will be the last of the race.

“Six months ago, we were hit by lightning in New York, which was catastrophic. This time, it’s not as bad, but it was still terrifying.”

Despite exhaustion, Herrmann has resumed racing, focusing on reaching the northeast tack and regaining his rhythm.

The Unyielding Spirit of Solo Racing

Herrmann’s ability to persevere through such an extreme ordeal highlights the resilience and determination required in the Vendée Globe. Even amidst chaos, his commitment to the race and gratitude for his team’s support remain steadfast.

As Herrmann continues his journey, his story serves as a testament to the unyielding spirit of solo sailors navigating the world’s most challenging race.
