In the world of hydroplane racing, commitment, focus, and relentless hard work are the pillars of success. Few embody these values as well as the Lupton family, whose extraordinary achievements on the North American circuit this year have solidified their place as true champions of the sport. From podium finishes in the United States to dominating the Canadian Hydroplane Racing League (HRL) series, Ken and Jack Lupton have left an indelible mark on the 2024 season.
The Rise of the Luptons in HRL
The Hydroplane Racing League (HRL), established in 2016, has worked tirelessly to position hydroplane racing as a premier motorsport. With a six-race calendar spanning May to September, the HRL draws thousands of spectators to high-adrenaline events from Cambridge, Maryland, to Salaberry-de-Valleyfield in Quebec. This year, one name echoed through the league’s communications—Lupton, Lupton, Lupton.
The 2024 season saw both Ken and Jack Lupton embark on a thrilling journey, racing their way to the top of the HRL Grand Prix standings. The phrase “Kiwis Can Fly” became a mantra, as the New Zealanders delivered one powerful performance after another.
Key Moments of the Season
- May: Ken Lupton kickstarted the season in Cambridge, Maryland, winning Heat 3B and setting the stage for a strong final.
- June: At the Brockville Regatta, although races were cancelled due to weather, Ken Lupton still managed to clinch the time trial victory.
- July: The Régates de Valleyfield, Quebec’s premier hydroplane event, saw both Ken (GP-577 Lucas Oil) and Jack (GP-33 Lupton Motorsports) dominate their heats, taking checkered flags in Heats 2B and 2C, respectively. Jack continued his winning streak at the Madison Regatta in Indiana.
- August: The “Thunder on the Niagara” event in North Tonawanda proved monumental, with Ken securing a win in GP-577 and Jack finishing third in GP-33.
- August/September: In a decisive final round in Beauharnois, Ken’s second-place finish in Heat 2A secured him enough points to be crowned the 2024 Grand Prix HRL Champion.
Not content with their HRL success, the Luptons made the bold decision to travel 4,600km across America to compete in the Grand Prix America series in San Diego. Facing off against 10-12 of the fastest Grand Prix hydroplanes in the world, the Kiwi contingent once again demonstrated their commitment to racing at the highest level.
Behind Every Victory: A Team Effort
While Ken and Jack took the checkered flags, their achievements were made possible by an outstanding support crew. Warwick Lupton, a driving force behind the team, along with Steve Preece, played crucial roles in ensuring the boats were in peak condition between events. The relentless work of the crew—repairing hulls, fine-tuning engines, and making crucial race-day adjustments—proved to be the backbone of the Lupton team’s success.
