The New Zealand Women’s K4 team has been named Team of the Year at the Halberg Awards, capping off a remarkable season that saw them claim Olympic gold in Paris. The crew of Dame Lisa Carrington, Alicia Hoskin, Olivia Brett, and Tara Vaughan delivered one of the standout performances of the Games, showcasing the power of teamwork, resilience, and determination on the world stage.

A golden moment in Paris

Their triumph in the K4 500m final was a defining moment in New Zealand’s Olympic campaign. Facing intense competition from Germany and Hungary, the Kiwis executed a near-flawless race, digging deep in the final stretch to secure victory.

For Carrington, it was an extraordinary sixth Olympic gold medal and a long-awaited first in the K4 event, completing her collection of titles across multiple disciplines. But this win wasn’t just about individual accolades—it was about four athletes moving as one, bound together by a shared goal and unwavering belief in each other.

The strength of the crew

From the outset, the K4 programme was built on a foundation of trust, discipline, and relentless hard work. Over the years, the squad evolved, learning valuable lessons from their fourth-place finish at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The inclusion of Brett and Vaughan in the line-up brought fresh energy to the team, while Hoskin and Carrington’s experience provided a steady hand in high-pressure moments. Together, they formed a unit that was both technically precise and mentally resilient—qualities that proved decisive in their Olympic victory.

Overcoming the challenge

Their Paris campaign was anything but easy. The German crew surged ahead at the halfway mark, forcing the Kiwis to find another gear in the closing stages. With the race slipping away, it was their ability to stay composed under pressure that made the difference.

With 250 metres to go, they launched their final assault, powering through the pain to reclaim the lead and cross the line as Olympic champions. It was a testament to their preparation, their belief, and their ability to execute their race plan even when the pressure was at its highest.

More than just a team

Beyond the medals and accolades, the New Zealand K4 crew embodies the essence of teamwork. The Māori artwork on their boat, featuring the weaving of four strands, symbolises their unity—four individuals working together to form something stronger than the sum of its parts.

The name of their boat, Purapura Whetū (Star Dust), reflects their connection to their culture, their journey, and the collective strength they draw from representing New Zealand on the world stage.

A well-deserved honour

Their recognition at the Halberg Awards is a fitting tribute to a team that not only delivered an historic Olympic victory but also inspired a nation with their dedication and perseverance. Winning the Team of the Year award places them among New Zealand’s greatest sporting teams, reinforcing their legacy in the country’s proud sporting history.

With eyes now set on the future, the K4 squad has proven that New Zealand canoe racing is stronger than ever. As they celebrate this well-earned recognition, they also look ahead to the challenges that lie beyond Paris—driven, as always, by the spirit of teamwork that carried them to the top of the podium.
