Beneteau First 30 and Oceanis 52 nominated for European Yacht of the Year 2026

Two very different Beneteau designs — one a nimble planing cruiser, the other a refined bluewater passagemaker — are in the running for Europe’s top sailing award.

The European Yacht of the Year Award is widely regarded as the sailing industry’s most prestigious accolade. Since 2004, it has been awarded through rigorous sea trials carried out by a panel of twelve leading European magazines. Each nominated yacht is sailed, compared, and judged under identical conditions.

For 2026, Beneteau has a strong hand — two of its latest designs have been shortlisted: the sporty First 30 and the luxurious Oceanis 52. Their inclusion highlights not only the brand’s breadth, but also its ability to innovate at both ends of the market.

Beneteau First 30 — planing for the people

The new Beneteau First 30, unveiled in January 2025, introduces a new category: the “planing cruiser.” Naval architect Samuel Manuard’s lightweight hull (10.33m LOA, 3,150kg displacement) delivers acceleration and glide normally associated with skiffs or racing yachts.

Two versions are available. The cruising model simplifies handling with ergonomic controls, perfect for couples or small crews. The racing version sharpens the rig with a traveller and extra trim options, appealing to club racers seeking performance. Below deck, the layout is compact yet practical, offering berths for four across two cabins.

Revisiting the iconic 1977 First 30 in Beneteau’s 140th anniversary year, the boat captures the brand’s dual spirit of heritage and innovation.

Beneteau Oceanis 52 — cruising, redefined

Where the First 30 pushes boundaries of speed, the Oceanis 52 refines long-range cruising. Designed by Roberto Biscontini with interiors by Nauta Design, it blends performance with luxurious liveability.

Its standout feature is the cockpit: 30% larger than the Oceanis 51.1, with twin C-benches, adjustable tables, and options such as a plancha grill. Wide helm stations and clean access to side decks ensure sailing remains practical.

The interior is open and warm, with a sloping companionway, C-shaped galley, and spacious saloon. The owner’s suite features a 160cm berth, panoramic windows, and a private “owner’s corner” for working or relaxing.

Layouts range from a three-cabin version to a five-cabin, three-head configuration, suiting both private owners and charter operators. Under sail, a self-tacking jib and furling mast simplify shorthanded sailing.

At 16.28m LOA and displacing 14,476kg, the Oceanis 52 is a true passagemaker, well-equipped for New Zealand’s coasts and beyond.

Two paths, one award

The First 30 and Oceanis 52 couldn’t be more different: one celebrates lightweight thrills, the other quiet refinement. Yet both are nominated for European Yacht of the Year 2026. Together, they showcase the breadth of Beneteau’s design philosophy and its continuing role in shaping modern sailing.
